An orthotic, sometimes call "an arch support" is a device inserted into a shoe to rectify an irregular walking pattern. Sometimes referred to as arch supports, orthotics allow people to stand, walk, and run more efficiently and comfortably.

Orthotic devices come in different shapes, sizes, and materials and fall into three main categories:
Rigid Orthotics - These devices control function and are used for walking shoes. They are often made from a firm material, such as plastic or carbon fibre.
Soft Orthotics - These are generally used for balance, pressure reduction and shock absorption. Commonly used for diabetic, arthritic and deformed feet, soft orthotics are usually made from soft materials.
Semi-Rigid Orthotics - These provide foot balance for sports and walking. Semi-rigid orthotics are commonly made of both soft and rigid materials.
